From Montreal to Carlisle

Anyone who reads my blog from time to time will know how excited I get when someone sends me a photo of my books on bookshelves! As a British author mostly published in the US I never get to see my novels in bookshops in my own country. I've seen many anthologies that include my work, Black Lace books, Cleis Press books, and any Mammoth collections I've been in – always a great cause for excitement! But my novels aren’t shipped to UK shops, only online retailers.

The very lovely, charming and talented Jeremy Edwards has sent me this super photo from a bookstore in Montreal. Not one but two of my titles. Thank you so much, Jeremy! It always amazes me to see this. Like.. I still can't believe I even have my work published, and yet there the books are!

So why Montreal to Carlisle..? Well, earlier this year we spent a few days in the Lake District. On a particularly rainy day we headed north to the city of Carlisle. Carlisle is a border city, next stop Scotland. As always we headed into the bookshop while we were there. There was a good sized Waterstones and we eagerly approached the erotica and romance shelves. I was hoping to catch sight of the latest Cleis press anthologies, and I always look for my pals books too, because I get a buzz out of that. This is where Mark has to stand by patiently while I squeal: "Oh look, Portia, Alison, Jeremy…" etc

As I approached the shelves I squeaked "Ooh look, James Lear!" I ducked down to the shelf for a closer look and… shock horror!...I see a familiar spine, a spine I've only ever seen on my own bookshelf at home... Yes, there was a copy of my 2006 Berkley novel, DOUBLE DARE. You could have knocked me over with a feather. My jaw literally fell open.

Not only have I never seen one of my own novels on the shelves in the UK, but this one is from 2006, my first print published novel. Why was it here, in the bookshop all the way up at the northern reach of England? We could only speculate that a copy was thrown into a box being shipped over, by mistake or chance. Or perhaps someone ordered it and never picked it up.

Needless to say there was much squeeing and gushing, pointing and wondering. I made quite a scene, in other words ;o) It was a golden moment!

A short break in Scotland

Okay, I finally found a few minutes to post a quick note about our short break last week – two whole days in Edinburgh, and two days where we were travelling on the train. Prior to that I'd been pretty much housebound for six months, because my bone condition played up and I was immobilised with my leg in a cast. My creative well was completely drained as a result!* I came out of the cast in January and going to Edinburgh was a celebration. It felt like being let out of prison! In fact I was so happy on the train that I believe I was embarrassing to be with. :o)

The journey to Edinburgh from our home in Yorkshire takes about three hours, and the train goes up the east coast through Northumberland – an amazing journey, with lots to see. I’d taken my e-reader to read on the way up and a print out to edit on the way back, and I did neither. I was literally glued to the window for three hours, both ways. Like a little kid, yes! I couldn’t help it. The views were amazing, and I hadn’t been out in so long that everything looked startling and fresh to me. Add to that that it was snowing – particularly on the train journey back, when we actually travelled through a snowstorm – and that made it an incredible trip.

We were extremely lucky because the days we were in Edinburgh itself were both dry and sunny, so although it was freezing cold we didn’t have to worry about sliding around in ice and snow. I can’t walk far but our hotel was right next to the Royal Mile, so we had lots of pretty shops, restaurants, coffee bars and rustic pubs just a few feet away. I was in heaven, watching the world go by.

Edinburgh is a super place for a city break. We hadn’t been in about 5 years, which was far too long. When we got there the city was filled with happy Welsh rugby fans, because they’d won the Six Nations match the day before. Lots of international visitors too, even though it was off season.

Here’s Edinburgh by day. Me outside Castle antiques on the Royal Mile, and in the photo below you can see the outline of the Castle on the mound, taken from just off Princes Street.

It’s hard to believe it was freezing cold with such a beautiful sky! Below, a blurry pic of Edinburgh by night, with the Castle in the far background. This skyline was taken from the North Bridge, and you can see roof of Waverley Station in the dip below. It was so cold and windy that we couldn’t hold the camera still, but it was such an amazing sight we had to capture it for the memory book.

And here I am enjoying the wonderful hospitality and ambience of Edinburgh by night. :)

The handful of shots below are from the journey back. For the first hour of the journey from Edinburgh through to Alnmouth the landscape is very sparsely populated, there are no stops on this part of route, and very few crossings or towns to be seen. You can see what a winter wonderland it was in these photos.

The train slowed going through this wintry forest, it was like something from Narnia!

We just managed to catch the edge of this snowy ravine from high above as we passed over it, which again was like something from Narnia or Lord of the Rings.

The landscape changes as the train moves down the coast and there are more signs of life, cattle and wildlife, (I saw all manner of birds and beasties from pheasants to shaggy highland bulls!) and more villages and rail crossings.

The train goes right along parts of the coast of Northumberland and I was mesmerised by the snow and seascape. We love Northumberland, a truly unspoiled part of the UK, and after a previous visit to that part of the country I set my first novella, SUMMER LIGHTNING, on the Northumberland coast. (As an aside, my Hero was a marine conservationist (inspired by the coastal locale) and one reviewer referred to him as a “tree hugger” which brought no end of amusement as I pictured my imaginary hunk hugging trees. Naked, of course. Can I be a tree? :)

I’ve always had this weird fascination with the image of a snowy beach. My heroine in DOUBLE DARE, Abby, has the same fascination. She gets her snow-filled beach at the very end of the book. And here it was for me, briefly. I was in heaven. Wish I could have been standing on the beach when it was snowing...

As the train travelled south there was gradually less snow on the ground, and especially in the city areas we could see how differently the weather had affected the landscape. This is the city of Durham just as the train pulls into the station from the North. Great view from the station! You can see both the cathedral and the castle on the hilltop at the far side. Durham is a favourite weekend retreat of ours but we usually drive, so it was a real treat to see it from this angle. I love the way the snow highlights the angles of the houses in this picture.

That's it folks! I got home invigorated from our wonderful trip, my creative well refilled, so there are now no excuses and I’m back to work. :)

*It was thanks to Alison Kent I became aquainted with the notion of the “creative well.” It’s such an accurate way of describing it, and the fact that living life tops up our creative energy. Thanks to Alison!

Home, and a new e-read

Back from Edinburgh! Had a much needed break from both desk and home, and will post some photos tommorrow. I got straight back into the thick it with edits that were due, and I've now re-engaged with the WiPs. Hoping for a productive week ahead, reinvigorated after all the superb scenery.

In other news, DOUBLE DARE is now available from Fictionwise. It's good to see the older titles coming online for ebook readers!

Moving up the gears into 2009

Well, I was very excited to greet 2009, but so far it has pretty much knocked me back, one way or the other. Never fear, I’m pulling myself up by the bootstraps and shoving my way up through the gears into full working mode. ;-}

In book news I'm pleased to announce that the recently published BRITS IN TIME anthology is now available on Fictionwise and it's discounted for the first few days. This one includes my short novella, BRAZEN BEHAVIOUR, a Victorian-set erotic romance.

DOUBLE DARE, my first Berkley novel, is now available as a Kindle book, and as a Mobipocket download. This is great news because it was previously only available in print! I hope it indicates that it will also pop up at Fictionwise and other online retailers, so that international ebook readers have the opportunity to pick it up.

In some positive possible future publication news, a short story of mine has been shortlisted for a prestigious anthology that I’m excited about. Very pleased to make it that far, and have my fingers crossed it makes the final hurdle!

I’ll post more about what I’m working on, once I get all the gears oiled and functioning at speed. I'm getting there. ;-)

Apprarently DOUBLE DARE is an antique already...

New sale, and lots of other good stuff going on here!

It’s been a bit of a crazy week, (in a good way,) with lots of great things happening here at home on shady lane! Work on Lillie’s story is coming along nicely, with two chapters complete. I have to shelve it now to work on something else, but I’m at a good point in the story to do so.

Preparations for the RWA adventure have been moving along, with Madelynne joining Wendy and I for the expedition – yay!!! We'll make a terrific (if giddy) trio of travellers. As of today we also have our flights booked, so it’s more or less all done and dusted and we can try to put it out of mind for a few months and get some work done... (notice I said “try” ;-)

Exciting news came in midweek. First up, my lovely agent heard from an Italian publisher who is interested in buying translation rights for DOUBLE DARE. I was absolutely delighted about the news. It might not come to anything, but it would be fabulous if it did! I have my fingers crossed.

Closely following on from that, my agent secured a new sale! Woohoo!! Harlequin Spice has commissioned a trio of linked stories for their ebriefs line. I’m thrilled to bits! The stories are about 3 workaholic brothers who each come into contact with a wild-woman-out-of-control, over the space of 3 seasons. Not sure what they’ll be called yet, but the proposal was offered under the overall title LOVING ON THE EDGE. I hope to have more news on that soon.

And we know what new sales means around here. Yup. Paaaarrrteeeeeeee! :-D

Interesting...

Anthology buddy, Sasha White, mailed me last week to let me know that DOUBLE DARE was at number one in the erotica charts at Barnes and Noble online. It's still there as I type, and I’ve seen it as high as number 153 in the overall chart during the last few weeks. Exciting, fun, and motivational stuff for me, but why it’s especially interesting is that it's been high in the charts since it went to bargain price status. These are the remaining copies at reduced price. What strikes me about it is I wonder how many more copies my novels would sell, in general, if the books were printed in cheaper mass market...curious making, yes?

Personally, as reader, I mostly go for a MMP book over a Trade Paperback because it means I can afford more books, and I'm more willing to take a risk if it's a new-to-me author. Alas, I seem fated to have my work in the more expensive TP, at least for the time being. Erotic titles are traditionally printed in TP, and because I was an early author at Juno Books my fantasy work there also came out in TP, although the line went over to MMP afterward. :-( I'd love to see something of mine in mass-market paperback one day. I guess I’ll have to add it to my "to do/dreamer" list ;-)

Anyway, if you're a reader in the US and you haven't yet given DOUBLE DARE a go, now's your chance to get it at a great price! :-)

Fun with words

According to this new Amazon feature called "concordance" (new to me) these are 100 most common words in my novel DOUBLE DARE:

abby across again against another arms away bed between body breasts came chair cock come door down ed eyes face feel felt fingers gave get glanced go going good got hair hand hard head herself hips ing inside knew know legs let life lifted lips long look looked looking marcy might mind moment mouth moved nathan need nodded now oh open own place pulled put reached right room saw see sex shoulder side skin smile smiled something sound still stood suzanne table take thing think thought time tom took turned voice walked want wanted watched whispered woman work yes zac

LOL yeah, it's erotic. When I read through the list various scenes flashed through my head, somehow triggered by the possible location of the word. Fun! :-)I particularly like reading the last line here. ;-)

Commenting on a review?

Commenting on reviews of our work is seen as bad form, not to mention wading into a potential quagmire and risking being labelled as an author behaving badly. :) Fair enough. I post reviews here as bits of news and when I want to discuss a particular aspect of my writing that the review has mentioned. I generally don’t comment on opinion. Reviewers are entitled to their opinions of our work, we put it out there so we have to be prepared for it to be taken apart in a way we’d never envisaged. Sometimes that’s very hard, but we have to take the good with the bad.

I am however now going to comment on a review, (trumpets sound, or is that the death knell I hear? :) Wait up, I’m not commenting on the reviewer’s personal opinion of my work, but some speculation she’s done about why I wrote it the way I did, and my New York publisher. Let’s call it setting the record straight

KINK has been reviewed on ERWA, click HERE to read the review. In the review, Lisabet Sarai, the reviewer, speculates that KINK was written the way it was because our New York publisher told Sasha and I how and what to write.

For the record, this was not the case.

I usually don’t say much about what the new erotic lines in New York are doing in general, because I have only my experience to go by and I don’t believe that’s enough to make broad, definitive statements. That said, my experience leads me to believe they are putting stuff out there to see what floats and what doesn’t, because the majority of their sales are to different markets than labels such as Blue Moon and Cleis Press.

The truth of the matter is that I’ve had to do fewer changes, revisions and editing for New York than I have anywhere. My first sale to Penguin, DOUBLE DARE, was a complete book when it was bought. My editor asked for one small revision and it was to do with the title, that I have my protagonist discussing the fact that she dares herself to do things, when she explains to her lover why she lied at the outset of their relationship. That was it.

With the KINK anthology Sasha White came to me with this idea that we write a kinky themed anthology together. A fun idea, I was up for it! In the beginning we envisaged a third author being involved. As it turned out, our agent presented our joint proposal, Penguin made us an immediate offer and said can you deliver this in two months please. We planned, wrote and delivered our novellas exactly as we would have done, except that it was a two-person antho and we were given more space for our stories. Up front, my editor asked me about the interaction between the conflict and the kink in my story, because I hadn’t gone into enough detail in my synopsis. Once I had clarified what I intended to do, she was happy.

I have never been told how or what to write by my New York publisher. In fact they don’t have style sheets or guidelines. Often I wish I was given more guidance, but as I said I think they are testing the waters to find out what floats for their particular market.

My story in KINK involves several elements of kink and sexual role-playing in a cat-and-mouse game between the characters. That’s what I set out to do, not to write a hardcore BDSM story. On the other hand I’ve had reviewers for the same novella saying that this is BDSM and not for the faint hearted. This doesn’t surprise me, because reader’s boundaries are not all in the same place. Kink means unconventional sex. I include some elements of BDSM, but it is not a BDSM story, nor is it labelled as such. That’s the whole fuzzy thing about erotica. I recently saw a well know romance reviewer stating that spanking is not BDSM. Dodgy ground, because to some people it might be. There is no right and wrong, (or there shouldn't be) because everyone has different levels and expectations of sex and (therefore) writing about sex. The danger is in ascribing certain formula to erotica, the resulting stories all become very samey. IMO that’s why my publisher is NOT ascribing any formula, the most specific thing they say in the only guidelines out there (which are on ERWA) is to use Emma Holly's work as a guide.

As writers, we cannot please all of the people all the time. It takes all kinds of people to make a world and all levels of spice to flavour it. Personally I’m happy when I’m pleasing some of the people in the world, thankfully it seems I am :) Anyone who has read a lot of my work can see that I do not write hardcore BDSM. I am more about writing fun romps, naughty stories about people pushing a little bit beyond their boundaries, sometimes with elements of kink, sometimes not. I’ve always written what I wanted to write, and prayed to god it would sell. Luckily a good bit of it has. The review on ERWA seems to suggest that I sold out from the short story writer I was. Not the case at all. Maybe what it really means is that I’m only any good writing short stories..? That’s entirely possible.

So why did Penguin sign me for this new line? I think they signed me because I had a readership in erotica through my short story publications, but I also had a proven readership with erotic romance readers through my Red Sage novellas. Every time a publisher signs a new author it’s a gamble. The majority of the contracts for the new erotic lines have gone to writers from the proven romantica e-book business. Mine was a slightly different background, but I believe that the crossover between my erotic romance publications and my erotica short stories gave me a solid CV.

I’ve never been a hardcore erotica writer, I dabble with it sometimes, but I’m always surprised to myself described as a BDSM writer. I’m not. There are many great writers out there who do that already, the reviewer included. ;) I know there is a difference between what I do and a true BDSM novel, and I’m not trying to do that. I believe there is space for books with different levels of kink. There is no right and wrong about sex out there (well apart from the obvious ones! ;) there is as a huge variety of sexual taste in the world, and thank goodness for that.

I just hope aspiring authors in the ERWA community don't think the speculation was based on fact. The editors of the line have a call on ERWA. Is it the reviewer’s job to speculate on whether the publisher told the writer to write this way or not? Maybe, I don’t know. Then again, she could have just asked.

Taking stock and…a huge sigh of relief..

Another week gone! It’s probably because I’m knee-deep in deadlines and working right through weekends at the moment, but the weeks seem to be flying by. RECKLESS is the big WiP at the mo, and it’s coming on well. It could be going a lot faster on the word count front, but it’s steady and productive so there’s a glimmer of hope I’ll meet these deadlines. :)

It’s been a great week for me overall, though. It may not come across on this blog but I’m a real worrier. When I stop to think about it, I also have very little self-confidence in my writing. Never a day (hour!) goes by that I don’t worry about readers enjoying my stories, selling copies, writing well enough, reviews, and all those things that can eat away at writers. It didn’t really change when a New York publisher signed me, in fact it got worse.

I feel as if I’ve been holding my breath for over a year now, waiting to see what will happen. It's hard, not really having any real idea how the first novel is selling. I can’t even walk into a bookshop and see my book because it's not shelved in the UK, so the whole thing often feels unreal to me. Before it went out, I knew I had readers who enjoyed my short stories. I’d also had many positive responses to my novellas for Red Sage, and my e-novel was selling well, but this was still a debut novel.

This week brought two positive bits of information that proved to me I should try to worry less, and concentrate on the writing. Being listed as a finalist in the Passionate Plume contest was such an amazing surprise, an honour that really gave me a badly needed boost. This week I also received my first Penguin statement. Boy, was I scared to open it! It would list how many sales I’d had for DOUBLE DARE from the time it came out in October, up until end of December.

I felt nauseas with nerves, really bad. When I did get it open, the first thing I saw was a cheque/check. I stared at it in disbelief! To be honest, I never even expected to earn out my advance. I can’t begin to describe the HUGE RELIEF I felt…

Wow, thank you to all readers out there who have bought my first book. It means so much for me to get over this threshold and have the chance to go on and entertain readers some more. It’s been a great motivation too, and I’ve been able to really enjoy my writing again. There’s nothing like a huge lump of stress about sales figures and all the rest that comes with being an author to put a kink in your writing stride!

I also heard from my Juno editor that advance orders for UNVEILING THE SORCERESS are looking good, and that one of the book buyers had been "intrigued" by the cover copy. All fab news for this here worrier. A big weight lifted off me.

So, it's back to work with a bit more oomph :) I love how RECKLESS is turning out, and hope that everyone who’s enjoyed my stories so far will enjoy this story even more. I’m learning and growing all the time as a writer, and this one feels strong. Still not sure exactly when it’s going to come out, but I’m sure I’ll find out soon. Not long until the deadline! I better get a shift on.

Have a great weekend!

Writing dilemmas

Alison Kent has a great blog post up at the moment about writing speeds and producing quality novels. This was particularly well timed reading for me, because I’ve just been taking reality checks from my lovely man, and my treasured CP. I'd found myself about to over commit for next year! Yikes!

I’ve always believed in quality over quantity, and it’s very important for me personally to make sure that each novel I write is rich, well researched and different to the last. Next year’s schedule is pretty well booked up, and yet I found myself unable to say no to an exciting proposition. Part of it, I guess, is that fear of not being asked again, and of appearing ungrateful. A few years ago when I was struggling to get published the concept of say “no” just wasn’t in my mentality! I can’t get past that, and I am very close to over committing and pushing myself too far. I know that if I do, everything will suffer, most importantly the writing.

I work for several publishers, and that complicates things for me. I am getting better at organising this though. For the first time recently I wouldn't allow myself to commit to a call for short stories. I used to write and submit to every one I saw. I will confess that I said no because I was physically unable to do the short. I was about to have an operation. But it was an important lesson for me. I can do it LOL I can say no. I need to be a bit more realistic about what I can get done -- and what I can get done well.

In other news, I heard from my editor at Berkley Heat, that Double Dare continues to be in the Barnes & Noble trade romance bestseller lists. I was totally amazed at this news, and very pleased indeed. Gobsmacked would be a good description (gobsmacked=speechless, for any US readers ;) Thanks to you lovely people who bought the book, and I hope you’re enjoying it!!!

Oh, and over at the Between the Covers blog, we’ve got a roundtable discussion today about the thing we like least about our personal writing process. Click on the banner to read more.

Bad news good news

Ach, I have a head cold and throat infection. Not bad enough to stop me working, thank god, I don’t need another knock back like that. But I'm pretty fuzzed here and hoping it doesn’t last long.

On the good news side, I don’t think I posted the release date for my next Red Sage Secrets novella. It will be in Volume 19, coming out in July. Yay! I believe it's an all paranormal collection, but will confirm who else has stories in it ASAP.

My novella, WHAT YOU WISH FOR, is one the first paranormals I wrote set in a contemporary world. Well, partly contemporary ;-) It's a white witch story set in Cornwall. I wrote it three years ago now, (it was in the queue at Red Sage for a long time after the editor I was with left.) I love the story to bits and it will be great to finally see it in print. More good news, I got another review for DOUBLE DARE that put a BIG smile on my face. This one is from Romance Reader at Heart, and the reviewer fell in love with my hero! That makes me so happy! Take a look:

Zach is such a smooth character, I found myself utterly in love with him by the end of the book. He exudes sex appeal and good old-fashioned machismo, and any girl in her right mind would be crazy not to love him.

DOUBLE DARE is exactly what you want if you are looking to spice up your reading. The sex scenes are not for the sensitive reader—they are hot and explosive—but the romance is great and the storyline is exciting. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. You will not be sorry! READ MORE

New review for DOUBLE DARE

A lovely surprise for me today, a new review for DOUBLE DARE that put a BIG smile on my face! Thank you to Cynthia at www.aromancereview.com
Here's a snippet:

I Double Dare you to go out and get this book! It will strike such a deep sensual reaction in you that you will definitely need relief. This is more than just an evocative erotic romance, it's a story of sensual exploration between soul mates. What woman doesn’t dream of that? I hated for the story to end. It was beautiful, stirring, solid writing and I can’t wait for more from this Black Lace vet. 4.5 roses. ...READ MORE

Featured at EAA!

I was recently interviewed by the lovely Pamela Weatherill (who is both a University lecturer in women's studies and an erotica writer) and you can now read the interview on line over at the Erotic Authors Association. I'm really proud to be part of this organisation, an organisation that does so much to support and promote erotic fiction.

For the interview, Pamela and I had a lot of fun chatting about strong heroines in erotic fiction, and more. Click HERE to read the interview, and HERE to read an except from DOUBLE DARE in the featured fiction slot.

Pamela also reveiwed DOUBLE DARE. Here's a snippet of what she had to say:

It is authors like Saskia Walker who give erotic fiction a good name. When you read Double Dare you immediately understand why the editors at Penguin picked up this title.

I found Double Dare to be a fun read with a strong female lead that didn’t have to be a dominatrix to show her sexual prowess. It was a refreshing erotic journey of both sexual and corporate adventure. All the power plays of a new erotic relationship and business investment are the backdrop for the characters who move the story along through both their corporate and sexual adventures. For readers who like it hot, Walker has achieved the story telling of some classic and exotic fantasies well. For readers who enjoy a powerful setting and a voyeuristic chance to hold the character’s secrets, Walker provides a rather romantic read without compromising the business world setting....READ MORE

Love the review, thanks so much, Pamela! I'm so glad you enjoyed the book!
