Hi Honeys, I'm home! Say hello to my new friend!

This beautiful creature is a six month old owl and I had the pleasure of holding him during our holiday in Mallorca. Isn't he gorgeous?!

Moments before this was taken we turned and looked directly into each other's eyes. He blinked, and I fell in love. I think you can see it in the daft happy look on my face. :) Anyone who has read my fantasy novella, THE STRANGELING, will know why... :)

Bron chose a sturdy oak to meditate beneath, sitting cross-legged at its base. He turned his face to the moon. Summoning the forces of nature, he enquired of the significant sources if he might draw upon them: the moon goddess, who lit the ground around him—the living creatures that moved in the hedgerows and shrubs, the faith and power of the elders at Western Tor. Preparing to harness whatever sources they offered him, he closed his eyes to what was around him and focused instead on the path back to Maerose.
Like reeds whispering in the wind, he heard their replies and felt them entering into his soul. He opened his eyes to a rush of color and light moving around him, vibrant in the still of the night. The elders pooled their power within him. It charged him with energy, with magic. He looked skyward, through the swirling light that shone down on him. The goddess of the moon had focused her attention on him, drawing her resources in from all over the land. He felt her acknowledgment and whispered the nature of his task to her, his voice riding easily on the currents of energy around him. She blessed his endeavor, sending him light and shadows to cloak himself as he saw fit. A subtle wind blew through the trees, and he rose to his feet on it. The call of a distant owl reached him, offering him passage and cover for his journey.
He took a deep breath, summoning his every resource, and his spirit lifted from his body and joined with the wise, magnificent bird. Its heart thudded within him, its blood beating into him. He saw through its eyes and took passage with it. The bird’s great and beautiful wings spanned out and the night air streamed beneath them as they rose. He sensed the shift of the fallen leaves around him as he took flight, gathering power and speed. Far below, the prey scurrying in the hedgerow became visible to his eyes as he covered the distance in the guise of the night predator.
Within moments they had traveled back to Veldor’s den. It stood, hunched against the wooded land, a gloomy retreat that emitted dark energies below them. Bron watched the stone walls and thatched roof as they grew closer, scanning the doorways. The owl landed on a window ledge, his silent wings attracting no attention from the men drinking inside the inn. He blinked, turning his head, spying the best way for Bron to travel through the maze-like passages to the cellar.
Bron urged the great bird on, and with one last call to the elders who channeled him their strength, he drew upon the shadows the moon goddess had offered, made himself invisible, and entered Veldor’s den.

I hope you've all had a good fortnight. More of my news as soon as I'm unpacked and have myself back up to speed.

Re-release news: THE STRANGELING

THE STRANGELING, a fantasy romance novella, has been out of print but is now available as an ebook from eXcessica publishing. Here's the summary:
In an ancient, magical world Maerose of Riversbend is a valuable prize. A young and gifted maiden, she senses that the dark night of Samhain—five moons away—will bring untold change. As that fateful night approaches she is first kidnapped by a stranger, then rescued by a mysterious elder who keeps her bound and tethered, as if she is his and his alone.

Locked in their battle for supremacy, Maerose discovers that she is the physical key capable of undoing a hundred-year-old curse that threatens their land. It is through her dormant sensual power that they can drive back the evil spirits about to rise from the dead. Seduction and magic surround her, and she must mate with a man of faith on the dark night of Samhain at the very gates of the underworld. Willing submission to her destined lover will unleash her power, but who will be the one to win her heart—Bron, or Veldor?

Red Sage news, + what else is happening with me

The official announcement has been made at the Romantic Times Convention so I can now share the latest Red Sage Publishing news. We're turning Japanese! Publisher, Alexandria Kendall, has secured a Japanese language rights deal through English Agency Japan (EAJ) with SoftBank Creative, a Japanese publishing company located in Tokyo. They are already translating some of the stories. The translations deal is excellent news for a small press! Can’t wait to see some of the Japanese SECRETS covers. :)

In other news, rights to my Juno fantasy romance novels have now returned and the books are no longer available through Fictionwise. There are a few print copies left at Amazon, Amazon UK, and various other outlets, but after that they will be out of print.

It feels like the end of an era and I'm sad my time with Juno is over. I learnt so much from the talented editor, Paula Guran, and had the chance to stetch my wings in fantasy a little bit, which has really helped me grow as a writer. I’m hoping to re-release these two novels, (for which I received some of my best reviews ever,) but obviously I have an idea when that might be. So.. if you want to read one, grab a copy now.

So, what am I working on now? I’m currently writing INESCAPABLE, a contemporary suspense novel. (I’m also writing a short story that is due very soon, eek!) INESCAPABLE is a ménage a trois story set in London and North Wales. When I’m working on this one I totally loose track of time! The characters and their situation have me enthralled. I hope to have publication news for that one before the summer is out, and I’ll post a blurb and an excerpt on the site soon.

I’m also planning a couple of contests/book giveaways for the blog, because I haven’t run one in a while. This time I'd like to do something different. I’m going to try to introduce my e-book readers to my print books, and vice versa. I’ll get those up in the next few days, so call back if you think you might like to enter!

On the reading front, I’m currently reading Kresley Cole’s NO REST FOR THE WICKED, book 2 in the series, but my 3rd read (I’m out of order ;) and enjoying it immensely. The first two chapters once again had me floored at KC’s talent, and her ability to plot conflicting characters and spellbinding openings. What a writer!

Okay, that’s where I’m at. Hope things are good with you.
Contests coming soon!

I'm still wading through email so if I owe you a reply it will be coming soon. I just wanted to post quickly that THE STRANGELING is now available as an ebook at Fictionwise and is on discount for the first few days, so if you want to read it get in there now! :-)

Quick update - UNVEILING THE SORCERESS is now available as an ebook from Fictionwise. Yay! It's a very good price too. Click here if you want to take a look or download.

I now have four ebooks at Fictionwise, exciting stuff. Later on in October THE STRANGELING will also go up there as an ebook, and I have a new shortie erotic romance contemporary, WINNER TAKES ALL, coming in November. You can see them all here.

More news from me soon. We're away for a few days next week for a well needed break and I'm madly trying to get stuff done before then, but will post my latest news before I go. Hope you're having a great week!

Good things

Okay, so I've been down in the dumps about various things, hiding in the bolthole licking my wounds, but I'm slowly creeping out and almost ready to face the world. As luck would have it, when I poked my nose out a couple of good things sauntered by and helped lift my spirits. First up, Carol Queen wants to publish a short story of mine. Carol Queen!!! I'm so honoured, dizzy with pleasure. Yes, I'm even smiling again, grinning like an idiot, in fact! ;)

And in review news, I really really liked what this reviewer had to say about THE STRANGELING... :)

THE STRANGELING is a story that interweaves pagan lore with the unlikely romance of two individuals brought together by an unwavering destiny. Behind the poetic descriptions of budding love and lust lies an exploration of duty versus desire which at times - but not always - coincide. Ms. Walker succeeds in showing the two sides of the coin of faith - selfless and self serving - as she showcases the paths of Veldor and Bron. This is a short novel that packs a big punch, but because of the graphic love scenes it is best enjoyed by adults only. Sylvia Cochrane for Roundtable Reviews...READ MORE

Where I'm at

My desk is slowly disappearing under scraps of paper covered in illegible scribbles, notes and stuff I must remember to add to the work in progress, RECKLESS. Deeply immersed in the book now, which is a good thing. I need to get to the halfway point, at least, by the first of May, to feel confident about making my deadline. I’m almost there. Got to make it!

It’s been a pretty quiet week otherwise, mostly because I’m so locked into the book now. We’re having glorious sunshine here in England, truly summer weather, and when I grab my five-minute breaks I go sit outside to get some light.

I had a terrific new review for THE STRANGELING from Terry at Quality Book Reviews, who said I had "a magical imaginative spark in storytelling" which really helped my motivation. I’m also doing an interview with Terry, who has some very interesting questions. In the meantime here’s a quick snip from the review.

The Strangeling is a short fantasy novel that is packed with vivid details and a precise amount of action. Walker writes the story with impact and the story is a superbly crafted erotic fantasy. The characters are well developed with detail and the author manages to tie the characters together well.

This is the first of the author’s works I have had the pleasure of reviewing and have to admit I am hooked. I look forward to her new release next month which is also a fantasy entitled “Unveiling The Sorceress”. A Magical 5 stars for The Strangeling! Read more..

Back to work on RECKLESS. If I do okay I get let out on good behaviour :) I get to see the Cruxshadows play live, with a night at a hotel thrown in. I like yummy goals like that to aim for ;) Wish me luck to make my mini deadline. I’ll let you know if I do.

Update on THE STRANGELING availability and the cover art contest

Because of distribution problems it took a while for THE STRANGELING to reach sales points, both online internationally and in stores in the US. The good news is it's all sorted now. I’m starting to get happy reader email (always a wonderful experience!) and entries for the cover art contest I’m running, which also indicates that the books are getting out now.

I had planned to close this contest at the end of April but with the delay in books getting out (and the fact you have to have read the book to enter this one,) I’m going to keep it open until the end of May. Here are the details again:

Win a signed print of the gorgeous cover art from THE STRANGELING, which was done by fantasy artist,Timothy Lantz. This is not a cover flat, it's a print of the actual artwork itself. I’ve got one framed on my office wall and it really is a pleasure to look at. To enter, send me an email to the following address: saskiawalker @ gmail. com (no gaps) with the answer to this question:

The heroine of The Strangeling is called Maerose. What is the name of Maerose’s sister?

Please put the following in the subject line to help me stay organised ;) "Strangeling cover art contest entry"

I’ve got three 8 by 10 inch prints up for grabs. I’ll post the results here and on my newsletter. Anyone can enter, reviewers included.

Speaking of cover art, I've had a preview of potential cover art for the next couple of SECRETS anthologies. Volume 19 includes my novella, WHAT YOU WISH FOR, coming in July. One of the covers was very yummy indeed, with a guy on it who looks like the guy in my story (always a bonus! ;) Can't share yet because it's subject to change, but will do as soon as it's finalised.

New reviews

My lovely editor at Juno Books alerted me to some wonderful new reviews for THE STRANGELING. I'm so pleased (and relieved!)the book is garnering such postive responses.

THE STRANGELING reviewed at Curled Up With a Good Book:

Fantasy fiction fans who also love a steamy romance will flock to The Strangeling, an erotically charged story about a beautiful woman with the power to defeat the armies of the underworld….titillating and highly descriptive fantasy story that offers up truly erotic sex scenes blended with nature magic and ancient wisdom. Author Saskia Walker succeeds at weaving powerful imagery with delicious romance. Fans of The Strangeling can also look forward to her next novel, due in late 2007, with the promise of more erotically charged fantasy that goes beyond the norm of romantic fiction.

…and at Dee and Dee Dish:

But, STRANGELING is so much more than erotica or magic. At it’s heart, STRANGELING shows how believing in ourselves and taking a chance really can pay off. There were also some very quotable moments in the book, and I just wanted to share one of those with you. “The best a couple can do is be strong for each other, if one of them is weak. Each one of us lives life like the ebb and flow of the tides, sometimes waning, sometimes fierce. Ultimately, though, one person cannot be strong all the time; in a couple, or a chain, they will always be strong.” Even if the rest of the book would have been a stinker (which is definitely was not), the poetic way Walker weaved those words was enough to make the book a good read…If you are looking for a straight Romance, you’ll be very disappointed in THE STRANGELING. However, if you want a very well written, Erotic Fantasy, this books for you. I know I sure enjoyed it, and hope you will too.

A good way to start a hard day! Hope it's a good one for you guys.

Happy St Pat's

Happy St Patrick’s Day! Once again we are surrounded by ludicrous caricatures of green leprechauns. :) Even the Horror channel is dishing up all night runs of appropriate films...well, all four versions of Leprechaun. Hmm.

Ah well, being half Irish I can hardly complain. Even though I dislike the increasing commercialism surrounding our holidays, I do like to celebrate the spirit of the events (in this case whiskey or Guinness ho ho ho) and for me that means socialising. Problem is I’ve spent the previous two evenings out schmoozing whilst supporting the CAMpaign for Real Ale at the local beer festival. A girl can have too much fun, especially when she’s recuperating from a chest infection that rattled on into weeks and months. So, I’m at home this St Pats. The Man of the House is out for the afternoon cheering on the Irish with friends, and I will lift a glass to St Pat and all he stood for when my man gets home. If you are out celebrating this evening, have fun and be safe!

Otherwise I’ve had my head down here at the desk the past few days trying to get my writing up to speed. We’re away from the homestead and PC for a week at the end of the month so I need to crack on. I’ve got two major projects to get done by June 1st, one that has to be done, (i.e. contracted) and one that I want to get done before then as well. It’s gonna be tight!

I read a very informative review of THE STRANGELING from Joyce at Speculative Romance online today. I’ll post it in its entirety because it gave me some very useful feedback about my work, things that I can learn from, and brought up some things I had wanted to discuss about the story anyway.

THE STRANGELING
AUTHOR: Saskia Walker
PUBLISHER: Juno Books PUB DATE: 2007
GENRE: Romance w/ Spec Elements ISBN: 978080955793
REVIEWED BY: Joyce Ellen Armond on 03/01/07 EISBN:

What do you get when you mix a heroine with the strength of love, a hero with the strength of faith, and scary demons? A surprisingly satisfying fantasy romance.

The Back Cover Tempts Us Thusly…

"One woman alone holds the power…to undo the hundred-year-old curse of a deathless army. Maerose, a beautiful and resilient maiden, must repel this evil horde by mating with a man of faith – on Samhain Eve, at the gates of hell. Unleashed, the girl's dormant magic can save the world. But a demonic madman hungry for power threatens to doom them all…"

The Bravos:

Forevermore, Saskia Walker shall be known as The Author Who Made Me Like It. THE STRANGELING tapped my two most hated romance elements and somehow made them work.

Virgin heroine: check. The bulk of the novel describes the sexual and emotional awakening of Maerose. Normally, that's a cringe-fest for me. But for the most part, Maerose came across with dignity, believable vulnerability and admirable emotional strength.

Soul mates: check. Maerose and her hero, the magic-using Bron, are fated to be together according to the elder scrolls. Walker delivered me from the short-handed feeling I usually get from soul mate romantic development. Even though he's the preeminent elder scroll scholar, Bron is still charmingly caught off guard by the strength of both his physical and emotional bond with Maerose. Maerose avoided the "he's my magic man and I love him" emotional immediacy precisely because her girl-to-woman awakening read true.

Plus, after a little bit of a slow start, the fantasy elements of THE STRANGELING satisfied with a nice mix of accessible ideas and unexpected twists – especially in the author's vision of magic.

The Lone Cat-Call from the Back Row:

Clunky dialog jarred me out of the narrative in far too many places. When the hero says he wants to take a deep draft of the heroine's body, I start wondering where she keeps the frothy head.

Final Verdict:

Short, sensual and sweet, THE STRANGELING delivers an unexpectedly good read out of usually suspect elements, and with a slight sexual and thematic sharp edge. I stayed up past bedtime to reach the happy ending, and my bet is you will, too.

I GOTTA READ A VIRGIN HEROINE JOYCE LIKES

Loved the review and thanked Joyce for her valuable feedback. I was, of course, disappointed the dialogue came across as clunky (although there is a built-in joke in there about the good head that I won't even attempt to make ;) Seriously though, when I write a story set in an ancient world I work hard to make every word seem appropriate to the time and place, and I wonder if that’s what my problem is -- or am I just crap at this job and should throw the towel in! LOL. It's something for me to think about. On the one hand I feel my dialogue is improving over time, and I’m always working at it because it’s a weak point. On the other hand I've still got a lot of learning to do and I know that.

I expect readers of my contemporary set stories might be surprised I wrote a virgin heroine. In my contemporary work my female characters are independent women very much in touch with their sexuality. It wasn’t something I had to think about, it was instinctive: this was right for the story. I’m really glad I carried it off in an acceptable way for a reviewer who cites it as a hated romance element.

When I set out writing THE STRANGELING I had Patricia McKillip's WINTER ROSE in mind, a novel I totally adore and worship. I was trying to get some way near evoking the kind of world she had for me in that story – eerie, rustic, beautiful and yet sometimes cruel. I wanted to create something like that for a story with an overt, explicit romance. I expect I’ve made some hideous error by making any kind of comparison between such a truly great fantasy writer and myself, a stumbling novice. It’s like comparing a sows ear (my effort) to a silk purse (Patricia’s book.) But I also believe we have to have our heroes and our goals as writers, to help us in our journey. How does the saying go...like the sailor who uses the stars to guide him, we may not reach what we follow but we find our destination along the way... or some such? Maybe someone knows the correct version.

The “predestined lover” angle is something I wanted to talk about when this book came out. There's been discussion on line about authors who use this plot angle, which crops up a lot in paranormal romance because it's often appropriate to stories such as werewolf and vampire tales. I admit I sometimes feel cheated if I read a story when a guy looks at a woman and recognises her as his mate, because it can short circuit the potential male conflict about the relationship. I say can, because not all writers use it to short circuit, but as a means to explore that dynamic. Depends who’s doing it. So why did I choose to do it and take the risk? Again, it was about the story, it was what the story wanted and needed, but I didn’t want it to be easy for my hero and heroine, I tried really hard to show that the “predestined” angle carried its own peculiar set of issues (like an arranged marriage would.) Joyce’s review shows me I achieved that, at least in some part, which gives me a good feeling (i.e. I let out a long withheld breath…).

I feel like I’m moving at a slow but steady pace on this writer’s journey, and each step is teaching me so much. Of course I wish the perfect book would come out every time. Maybe one day. :) I’ve had interesting feedback on this particular story in reviews, and it really helps. I’m always keen to learn from constructive criticism. Anyway, better get back to it or it’ll be time to crack open that Guinness before I know it ;)

Cheers all!

"Strangeling cover art contest entry"

Now shipping: THE STRANGELING

I’m hearing via the grapevine that THE STRANGELING is now available. Hurray! Apologies to the readers who put in advance orders, I think Juno is up to speed now.

I’ll launch my reader contest soon, but in the meantime I want to point you to a great deal over at Juno Books. If you sign up for the newsletter, you can claim $2.00 off books ordered direct. This means you can pick up THE STRANGELING for only $7.95 USD! If you are in the UK and you want to try a batch of Juno books, it may well work out cheaper to use this deal and ship to the UK.

Here’s the link for buying direct from the publisher.

I’ve also been getting feedback for THE STRANGELING, and I’m very pleased indeed with what the first readers have had to say:

"If you are a fan of this kind of stuff you will find this book a joy. Walker knows her genre and she riffs on its themes brilliantly." Mathilde Madden, for Reflection's Edge

"THE STRANGELING is the sort of story that haunts the reader long after the last page is turned. Saskia Walker has a true gem with this superb fantasy novel coupled with all the elements to make a great paranormal romance as well. This reviewer will definitely be keeping an eye out for further fantasy novels from this fabulous author!" 5 Klovers. Debbie, for CK2s Kwips and Kritiques.

"a wonderful one sitting fantasy" Harriet Klausner, for Alternative Worlds.

and most recently from Milady Insanity: “The Strangeling reads like a fairytale. A dark, sensual fairytale. It’s the kind of book you want to read curled up by the fireplace in winter, perhaps with a nice cup of hot chocolate in your hand. 4 out of 5.”

That’s just the kind of book I wanted it to be! I’m delighted with the reviews and comments. It was always a dream of mine to write fantasy alongside contemporary erotic romance, and I’m very excited to be at this point in my life. It’s a short novel (category length) and I’m hoping to tempt readers of my contemporary work to try this one as well. The story is a fantasy romance with erotic elements, set in a rustic world. Here’s the back cover summary:

One woman alone holds the power to undo the hundred-year-old curse of an invincible army of dead men who wait to prey upon the living. Maerose, a beautiful, resilient maiden must drive back the evil spirits by mating with a man of faith on the dark night of Samhain at the very gates of the underworld. Her dormant magic can only be unleashed by willing submission to her predestined lover . . . but a mad man aligned with the demonic forces of the underworld threatens to possess her in his place.

Mmmm, beautiful art prints

Anyone who calls by here regularly will know how taken I was with Timothy Lantz’s artwork for my forthcoming Juno Fantasy novels. I ordered some prints of the cover art, for contests to celebrate the publications, and one of each to frame for my office. They arrived today and the art looks even more gorgeous in print form! The colours seem richer and even more vibrant. Timothy kindly signed his work, so these will make lovely keepsakes for Fantasy fans.

I’ll be running the first contest, to win one of two signed copies of “Nymph,” the artwork that was used for my novel THE STRANGELING, when the book starts shipping in a couple of weeks time.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying multiple copies of the images around me to brighten these overcast January days. ;)

You can read excerpts on the site, and there’s an art gallery for you to check out the cover art. The webmistress has also set up a forum, and I hope anyone who has questions or comments about the novels or the line will post there.

Coincidentally, this morning I received my first review for THE STRANGELING, my first fantasy romance novel with Juno, due out very soon. I have to admit it’s getting a bit chaotic here, with so many things coming out soon. I'm still receiving new reviews for DOUBLE DARE, and reviews for KINK and STRANGELING are starting to come in. It's a bit like buses, nothing for ages and then... I wrote the stories over a number of months/years but they have all come out in the space of a few months. This can happen. The first half of this year is very busy for me, but the second half is looking quieter. Phew!

The even better news is that THE STRANGELING has received 5 Klovers from CK2s Kwips and Kritiques! Debbie, the reviewer, had some wonderful things to say:

THE STRANGELING is a hauntingly beautiful tale of good versus evil. An eerie atmosphere permeates the story as Saskia Walker brings her carefully crafted world to vivid life. The lush descriptions of the scenery are stunning as Ms. Walker depicts the stark, almost ghostly reality of THE STRANGELING. The images evoked by the demons will send shivers down the spine of the reader of this compelling tale.

The character development of Maerose, Bron, and Veldor is superb. Maerose demonstrates great strength of character and her purity of heart shines through. She is a phenomenal female lead in this fantasy and her character truly makes this story work. Bron is the perfect male complement for Maerose as he seeks only to do what is right. Veldor provides a stunning contrast as his malevolence is powerfully written.

THE STRANGELING is the sort of story that haunts the reader long after the last page is turned. Saskia Walker has a true gem with this superb fantasy novel coupled with all the elements to make a great paranormal romance as well. This reviewer will definitely be keeping an eye out for further fantasy novels from this fabulous author! Read full review.

Woohoo! I hope anyone who picks up this novel enjoys it as much as Debbie did! :)
