A taster from THE LIBERTINE...

I'm gradually crawling back to the real world, with the jet lag on the run. I've almost got the upper hand on the post-convention-lurgi too. The jet lag was particularly tenacious this time around. It took me all 6 days to pull myself anywhere near Central Standard Time in the US. Then I came home... It took over a week to reverse the process and make up for the entire missed night sleep on the return journey. What can I say, my body likes routine.

So I'm not coughing as much and I was finally able to work again today. I'm making slow progress, but it's great to be back working on THE JEZEBEL.

When I visited Good Reads I noticed that a few readers have already marked THE LIBERTINE to read and that made my day! That book is with my editor now, and I should have her feedback any day. Meanwhile I've put the (unedited) opening scene up on Good Reads to give a taster of what is to come from book two, Lennox Taskill's story.

Lovely new review for HOLLY'S INTUITION

Delighted to see this new review for HOLLY'S INTUITION from Lucy Felthouse at Erotica For All and Blog Critics. HOLLY'S INTUITION is the second in a series of three, and it's always a worry that the books stand up against each other. In the reader comments at Good Reads, many readers are stating which their favourite (of the first two) was and why, which is always *really* useful feedback for an author. Wow — this is one hot book! Holly's Intuition is the perfect mix of sexiness, character development and plot. I loved all three main characters and enjoyed how the story progressed. Time out for a writer. What does that actually mean?

After the summer-of-many-deadlines I came to the conclusion that I needed a few days away from the keyboard. What does "time out" actually mean for a writer who is attempting to make a living at the job she loves? ;o) Well, for this one it means doing stuff like cleaning house, washing the curtains, weeding and pruning, getting the boiler serviced, reading for friends, checking supplies, and updating accounts. In other words it’s hardly a rest. Then again, a change is as good as a rest. It’s been a good chance to do some of the stuff that I don’t get done the rest of the time, and I do feel refreshed.

In reality, a writer’s work is as long as a piece of string. If you’re trying to make it pay your bills, as many of us are, the best thing you can do to build your career is: keep writing, do as much promo as you can hack, and pretty much everything else (that is non life threatening or the man of your dreams) takes second place. Yay, that means the dishes can wait, right? ;o)

However, I do have a couple of fun days ahead -- also vital to refill the creative well. Dangerous Liaisons in Ballet form, courtesy of the Northern Ballet company (a birthday treat from my Real Life Hero!) and a trip out for some Yorkshire scenery, shopping and lunch. Then it’s back to the writing schedule until the end of the month when we escape to the rugged East Coast.

Meanwhile, a super new commentary came in for RAMPANT, from author Casey Sheridan. She said: Wonderfully written. Unique story. Luscious hero. Scorching hot read. I loved it! One of my top five favorite books. 5/5 stars.

Yay! Thanks Casey. I’ve also seen a review of the Italian translation. I don’t speak Italian but I get the feeling that “Splendido...” and “Bello, bello, bello!” sound like the reader might have enjoyed it. :)

Good Reads readers have posted some very encouraging responses to RAMPANT. Thank you so much! I appreciate every post, and I’m so pleased readers are enjoying this book!

I promised some special blog posts on my research and resources, and a discussion about the artifacts that are still extant from the time of the Scottish witch trials. Those things are on my to-do list, so do call back if you’re interested in finding out more about the background to my Scottish witchcraft novels. (Both RAMPANT, out now, and THE HARLOT, June 2011)

Good Reads, and my latest good read

I joined Good Reads a while back and I love it, it's a great resource as well as functioning as a social network for readers and for authors. Things have been so busy here that I never finished building my page and I'm trying to get to grips with that at the mo.

I decided to cross reference my reading recs here as well, so here's my latest good read recommendation, THE CUREWIFE by Claire-Marie Watson.

The Curewife is a 1st person narrative literary novel that is written as a diary. A fascinating tale, especially if you have an interest in Scottish history and life in Dundee and Tayside in the 17th Century. This book won the Dundee book prize in 2002.

The story tells the life of a curewife, a Scottish woman who was ultimately condemned for witchcraft. The author has woven her story around what little is known of Grissel Jaffray, a real woman who was actually condemned, but whose life is a mystery. The book is meticulously researched and rich in historic detail. Highly recommended for lovers of great historical fiction.

Trivia: I noticed on the Amazon blurb the book is described as having a parallel narrative, the story of a modern day New England character, a descendent. This is on both the UK and USA Amazon sites, but my version of the book only had the historical tale. I don’t know if there are different versions (it doesn't look that way…) or if this is something the publisher had hoped for. I believe the book I read was the version that won the Dundee Book Prize, not sure if the other one will appear or is perhaps a related follow up, or just didn’t happen. (Add it to the list of great mysteries of the publishing world!) Either way, I’m longing for more from this author. Claire-Marie Watson, please write more!
