North Wales, tree sculpture, and Gustav Klimt

After the flurry of exciting sales news, I’m going to travel back in time to last week. Well, not literally, but I promised a couple of friends I would post about the Klimt exhibition and our trip to North Wales. So, here you are, a couple of photos to begin with.

This is me in Conwy on the north coastline of Wales. I was looking across the harbour when Mark snapped me. He said I look as if I’m thinking “I have conquered Conwy, onward, to Llandudno,” which, come to think of it, is kind of what we were thinking at that point.:)

I love North Wales, its mixture of pretty coastline and villages, and majestic Snowdonia. It’s a beautiful place to visit and we’re so lucky that we can get there inside two hours. It’s the perfect place for a 3-day break for us. Conwy and Llandudno are must-visit spots every time. Conwy is a harbour town with a castle built on the hillside. Very steep streets, but flat by the harbour itself. Llandudno, on the other hand, is on a sweeping bay and is a promenade town. It’s well suited to people who have mobility issues. We had good weather and although we stayed at a basic lodge, (like a motel, for my US readers) I was delighted to discover our room overlooked a paddock, and we had horses (and bunnies galore!) romping around outside. It was a bit like nature watch every time we were in our room. :o)

The second picture is of a tree carving that we discovered in the gardens of Plassey craft centre. Isn’t it amazing? I fell in love with her. She made me think about my pagan heroine in The Strangeling, Maerose. Honestly, I wanted to take her home with me. The artist is Simon O'Rourke. and his website has lots more examples of his fab work.

We’d booked tickets to attend the Liverpool Gustav Klimt exhibition on our return journey. We had hoped to do it on the way down but it was completely booked up! As with any major ex in the UK the exhibition is getting a huge attendance. There was a diverse range of people there, and many had travelled long distances to attend.

The exhibition was amazing, just as I had expected. It opened with a recreation of the Beethoven frieze. It was stunning! As an art history student (long time ago now) we were nagged how important it is to see the art works in the flesh. Reproductions on paper/books can't truly convey the space or size, and that is so crucial to our experience of the work and the artist’s intentions. I didn't have to be nagged, I always loved visiting galleries. In fact I think I got my place on the art history course of my choice because I was able to talk about exhibitions I’d been to before I applied. I was reminded of this fundamental lesson as I stood looking at the recreation of the frieze. The space, movement, and lightness of spirit was incredible. The details here and here give only a very faint idea of what it is like in real life. Suffice it to say I could certainly live with it.:)

As the exhibition continued upstairs there was a room of smaller Klimt works, followed by works from other Vienna Seccession artists and designers. In fact I was just wondering how much more Klimt there was going to be, when I discovered there was much more to come. Lots of exhibits spanning his career.

As Klimt fans will know, he was influenced by the intellectual atmosphere of Vienna at the time. Sigmund Freud’s theories on female sexuality were out and creating a stir--- shock horror, women might actually enjoy sex! Oh yes, and Klimt was fascinated by it. It’s amazing (and sad) to think that a hundred years later we still seem to have to convince some people that women enjoy sex and that’s a GOOD thing. However, I digress…

The final room housed “adult” art works. These were mostly sketches of women masturbating, beautifully done and deliciously arousing to observe, as I’m sure Klimt intended. I walked around the room with a little smile on my face because they’d provided a way to sidestep the room for under 18 or anyone of a sensitive disposition, :o) but the art works themselves had incongruous titles like “semi nude with right leg raised.” Believe me, not many people were looking at her right leg. It tickled me. Just saying.

To sum up, if you like Klimt and you can make it to the exhibition -- don’t even think twice! Go! Read more about it here.

Okay folks, I have a short story that needs finishing. Tomorrow is publication date for RECKLESS and I’ll be giving away a couple of copies to celebrate, so come back tomorrow and help me party!:)

My kitty

This basket was on its way out to the shed when the cat caught sight of it. She quickly decided it was just what she had always wanted and that she could squeeze herself into it (boy, do I know that feeling! :) She put up a valiant struggle, trying to wedge herself in, then decided to give up on it and walked away in a huff. I have a pair of nubuck jeans that I feel exactly the same way about.

Lots of exciting news about sales!!!

Wow, I don't know where to start. I came back to so much good news in my mailbox that I've spent the last 24 hours thinking I must be dreaming!

I think I'll work up to the big one, that way it might finally sink in for me. :)

First up, I heard that a short story of mine was selected to appear in the next Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica. I'm delighted, and honoured! The story is THE INNER VIXEN and it originally appeared in the SHE'S ON TOP anthology, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel.

Next up, I made a new short story sale to the wonderful and prolific Violet Blue. More news on when and where that one will appear soon.

And finally... my lovely agent had news of a two book paranormal erotica deal with Harlequin Spice!! Oh my god! Gulp. I'm overawed! I've been so impressed by the Spice books, I'm absolutely bowled over by the news that I'm going to be part of that line, as well as Spice Briefs.

My first book will be RAMPANT. There's a short excerpt on my site HERE. The second book is to be decided. I'll be getting together to chat about it with Spice editor Susan Swinwood at the RWA conference. So exciting!!! RAMPANT draws together so many of my interests: paranormal and fantasy, Scotland and history, romance and erotica. I couldn't be more excited about working on it. I have a couple of short projects I have to finish up, then it's straight back into it. Yay!

Well now, anyone who visits here regularly knows what is coming next. Parteeeeeeeeeeeeee!! :)

Away from the desk for a few days

Okay folks, we're off to North Wales for a short break first thing tomorrow morning. Really looking forward to it!! We've also booked to attend the Klimt exhibition at the Liverpool Tate on the way home, and I'm beyond ecstatic about it!! I adore Klimt and (as it happens) two small Klimt paintings get a starring role in RECKLESS. :)

So for the next few days we will be enjoying lovely things like this:

Have fun! See you late Thursday or Friday.

New publication - OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Tales of Office Sex

What is it I always seem to end up saying...my publications are like buses. Nothing for ages, and then a whole bunch at once!

OPEN FOR BUSINESS - Tales of Office Sex, is now shipping, and it's a couple of weeks early.

We’ve all heard the saying "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Luckily, for Jack, this collection offers more than 20 stories filled with the art of sexual play at work to make even Jack more lively. Here the most mundane 9-to-5 job can lead to a rowdy romp that’s sure to leave people talking by the water coolers. From special offices where naughty secretaries are firmly spanked, to cold callers who hook up with Dominatrixes, to temps finding the men of their dreams washing more than their windows, the restrictions on employee dating are wantonly and willfully broken. Featuring some of the best erotic writers around today including Radclyffe, N.T. Morley, Saskia Walker, Xavier Acton and Savannah Stephens Smith.

This collection is published by Cleis Press and edited by the amazingly prolific and talented Alison Tyler. It has a very unusual and intriguing structure. Alison says this about it:

"My goal was to take readers through a whole work week, starting with Monday Morning and ending with a commute. In between are trysts and romps in offices, on desks, over three martini lunches, and more. As the back cover says: Filled with "furtive trysts, voyeurism, and spanking—these 22 steamy stories give new meaning to mixing business with pleasure.""

My story previously appeared in the HIDE AND SEEK collection, so some readers may have seen it already. (It's commonly known as the window cleaner story around here ;-) I'm delighted it was selected to be in this anthology, not only because the idea of the week long erotic office scenarios appealed to me immensely, but because it's one of my favourites. If you'd like to read a juicy excerpt, go HERE.

New short story publication, find it in Scarlet magazine

A new short story from moi will be available shortly in the saucy UK women's magazine Scarlet. I'm so excited! I just received my copy and here's a quick pic. The fiction section is illustrated by talented graphic designer Dunni Mustapha. I just love her image for my naughty Paris romp! Check it out.

Several of the Total-E-Bound authors have their fiction featured in this issue and you'll get stories from Alexis Fleming, Dakota Rebel, and Barbara Huffert, as well as from me. We're in great company in this issue with other writers including Alison Tyler and Mathilde Madden. If you're a UK reader you can check it all out in the July issue. It's the one with Jordan looking rather elegant on the cover. Grin.

More shipping news -- Amazon UK!

Availability: Usually dispatched within 12 to 14 days. Dispatched from and sold by Amazon.co.uk.

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :)

A new week

It’s the start of a new week, and I’m feeling goooood. :) Last week was productive. I’ve got a new short story on the go, (alongside the other short story and the novella that are already on the go. Seriously, I work best this way!) and I’m feeling comfortable with my schedule again after an uneven couple of months.

I've discovered that for some reason I achieve most when I stay away from word counts, meters, writing challenges, and so on. I’m a very social person, but when it comes to writing I thrive with my workload when I’m simply left playing in my own sandpit. Maybe it’s something to do with being an only child. Whatever it is, I don’t seem to have the competing gene. I’ve tried to do several types of challenges and it just doesn’t work for me.

I’m slowly getting used to the idea that RECKLESS is shipping early. LOL! This book means a lot to me and I feel like I should be standing by in my best outfit, proud and glowing, on publication day. The date has, however, snuck up on me while I’ve been getting ready for the RWA conference and pushing forward with the current WiP. I’m watching out for my author copies though, because then I can jump up and down and squeal and celebrate :) We have a few days away in North Wales coming up next week, but I'll be at home for the official release date.

In other news, July's edition of SCARLET magazine features one of my short stories (more on that soon) and two editors I love and respect have asked if they could use some of my writing. Needless to say I'm absolutely thrilled with all these things going on. The editors enquiries in particular felt like a great compliment, so that’s all good. More news on that soon.

Ooh, to finish up, here's something for authors. Manic Readers are hosting complimentary author promo pages. Go here to register.

Reading and film – Cynthia Eden’s Hotter After Midnight, M. Christian’s Painted Doll, and The Illusionist

I’ve read a couple of books that really impressed me recently, so I thought I’d post a little bit about them. First up is Cynthia Eden’s HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT. I'm a big fan of Cynthia’s Red Sage novellas, (we shared pages in SECRETS 15,) so I've anticipated this read for a long while. I’ve also worked with Cynthia. She's a talented editor, one of the top editors I have worked with and I’ve worked with a few now.

Cynthia has had several books signed by Kensington and HOTTER AFTER MIDNIGHT is the first of a paranormal series. As soon as I picked the book up I knew it was a winner. The plot grabbed me straightaway and wouldn’t let go. The pacing is terrific, the dialogue snappy and believable, and above all the storyline and romance are hot, edgy, and exciting. All the ingredients for a great paranormal romance.

The story follows Emily Drake, a psychologist who has a psychic gift when working with “the other.” The Other includes demons, vampires, witches, and the like. She is also working as an adviser to the police, and she’s teamed up with Detective Colin Gyth. Colin tries to hide the fact that he is a shape shifter, but of course Emily can sense it. She's also hugely attracted to him. The conflict and the erotic tension between the two of them is palpable, making me want to race through the pages to find out how and when they will give in to each other, and yet at the same time making me want to pause and savour each delicious morsel. Meanwhile, danger is all around as The Night Butcher stalks. During their investigation Colin and Emily have to face many foes, as well as learn to trust in each other.

I can’t recommend this novel enough! I also can’t remember having had such a good paranormal romance read since I last picked up an Angela Knight book! Oh yes, if you are a PR reader, Cynthia Eden is a new author to buy, read and follow.

The other novel I have had the pleasure of reading recently was M. Christian's PAINTED DOLL. Very different, but another absolute treat of a read. Now, this one is not out yet, but I'll be nudging you again when it is. M. Christian got in touch with me to ask if I would blurb one of his forthcoming novels. Gulp. He also said he admired my work. I confess I wondered if he’d sent the mail to the correct person! :) I’ve never been asked to do this before, and whilst M. Christian is a writer who I’ve shared pages with in anthologies before, I’m pretty much in awe of all that he does. His fantasy novel, THE VERY BLOODY MARY'S was a super, gripping, thoroughly entertaining read.

It was a great honour to be asked to blurb a new novel, and I set about the task nervously. Wow! My nervousness was nothing to the sheer uselessness I felt after having read the novel. I don’t know whether my blurb will be used, but I had to give the novel mention. If futuristics are your thing, you really have to watch out for PAINTED DOLL.

PAINTED DOLL is set in an eerie future world -- the type of world that always gets me, where things are both similar to what we know but also not of our experience, so that the vivid images we encounter tease along our perception uneasily. In this future world we encounter the story of The Painted Doll, a woman who works as a dominatrix in order to hide a secret past and her true identity. As the story progresses and The Painted Doll slowly removes the layers of her mask for us, we find out her story and the reasons why she’s had to take on a new identity and hide. I don’t want to say too much and spoil the plot, but The Painted Doll is on the run from some very bad people. Most importantly she has had to leave and hide in order to protect her lesbian lover from those very bad people. The novel is compelling, gritty, erotic, and at its centre lies an intense love story.

M. Christian is an author who straddles genres with apparent ease, as well as writing with literary panache. In this novel (and in his previous works) he plays with the recurring themes of sexuality, gender, and identity, questioning them by setting them at odds with what we know and understand. PAINTED DOLL resonates; it truly is a story that will stay with you. Out on Lethe sometime soon. Watch out for it!

On the film front, we finally caught up with THE ILLUSIONIST. I’d been wanting to see this one for ages, and I really enjoyed the unfolding story as I was watching it, (as in couldn't look away while it was on!) but it didn’t have as much impact as a film as I was hoping it might, based on advertisements I had seen. The attraction/romance was a wee tad neglected, I felt, and given that it was driving the story, it felt unbalanced. Perhaps that was it? Who knows? Beautiful and compelling to watch, but not as haunting as it might have been. Of course I’m sure I'd have enjoyed it more had Rufus Sewell been the hero, but that’s just me ;)

Oh, do I so know this feeling!

What have I been up to?

This past week has gone by in a whirl, mostly because I’ve had two wonderful writer meetings to attend. The first was with Wendy/Portia and Rosemary Laurey. Rosemary was over in England visiting family and broke her travels to meet. The day went by in a flash. Rosemary is so bright and funny and has such wide knowledge on the industry, we lapped up all the chuckles and chatter. Then on Saturday I met with Wendy and Madelynne, in order to discuss our forthcoming RWA conference trip – which is in less than 2 months now! Another fabulous day with lots of laughs, as well as serious chatter about the industry and the logistics of the trip itself.

Having two meetings so close together was probably good practise for my first writer’s conference. I was meant to go on to hear my dear old friend Matt play live, but, alas, (waaah!) I had to give it a miss. :( Things are just crazy busy right now.

In other news, subbed a new short story today (fingers crossed!) and I'm making slow but steady progress overall. Cynthia asked what I was working on at the moment. I've got two novels on the go. RAMPANT (an erotic paranormal, first draft blurb and excerpt via the link) and INESCAPABLE (an erotic contemporary romance.) I’ve been working mostly on INESCAPABLE this past couple of weeks, absolutely loving the dynamic between the three main characters (not a ménage, something slightly different -- I'll get a page and an excerpt up on my site soon for that one, too.) I’ve also got a couple of shorts on the go, as usual.

I’ve got a blog post half done about writing series stories. I wanted to say something about it since I've just done my first (short) series. I’ve got a recommended reading post to go up, too. The promised new website is also on the way, just some final decisions on button labelling to be made. ;)

Hope you’re having a great week!

This is fun, but rather odd…

This crept up on my Google alerts yesterday, and I was amazed!

RECKLESS is due out in just over 3 weeks, and last night it was number one on the "world > fiction > Spain" hot future releases list at Amazon UK, and it was in the top 50 of "world > fiction > Spain" bestsellers list.

Now, I’m assuming that the readers who buy "world > fiction > Spain" are wanting to read stories set in Spain, not just stories that are actually in Spanish. Let's hope so! If not, there's trouble ahead for the people who categorise the books! :) I was surprised, but then we Brits do love Spain. I know I do. Hence the book. But it was an odd little occurrence to see it there.

If you are a reader and you are looking forward to the setting, I hope you enjoy! I love Catalonia, just love it. Three of the chapters are set in the city of Barcelona -- one of my favourite cities in the world -- and the majority of the book is set in a village/ villa in the countryside. Lots of local flavour.

Proper news coming soon.
