A quick hello

I made my deadline with time to spare.

Yay!

But now I have galleys for RECKLESS waiting in the wings...

Ha!

These things all seem to come at once. The good news is I’m on top of it and will be posting more regularly soon.

I hope things are going well in your part of the world. Have a great week!

Chicks Rule. The Rise of Female-Oriented Fantasy and Science Fiction

Chicks Rule. The Rise of Female-Oriented Fantasy and Science Fiction

Deadline closing!

Eight days until my deadline, and around 11,000 words to go. Eeek! :o) It's doable, but ordinarily I wouldn't be up against it like this, I'd already be editing by now. Unfortunately I've been ill so I've been crawling along with a box of tissues in tow. I need to speed it up. Hoping for a better week ahead. If you're taking part in the Sven challenge, keep at it!

I've got some fun plans for April once this deadline is behind me, including some books to give away here. It sounds as if DIRTY GIRLS is coming very soon, so there will be news about that anthology. (The Amazon blurb seems to suggest it's an all-American antho, but it includes at least two contributions by Brits, myself and the very talented Madelynne Ellis.) I'm also going to start posting excerpts and/or fun facts about RECKLESS. Meanwhile, it might be a bit quiet here while I hunker down and finish up my LOVING ON THE EDGE trio of shorts. Oh, I'll post about them too, once I'm done with them. ;-)

Reviews

It's generally seen as bad form for authors to comment on reviews (especially negative reviews) and I agree. In fact I've only ever commented on a negative review once before, when a reviewer posted misleading info about the publisher involved. I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion on fiction, and I can learn from that. This, however, fascinated me.

2 reviews. Same book, different book?

On the bright side, this book is one of those that you shouldn't worry too much about falling into the hands of teenagers that you fear are too young to read adult materials because while Saskia Walker also writes erotic romances, this one with its perfect positive sunshine figurehead characters can be read by young kids without having to ask their parents embarrassing questions about the main characters' coital antics. For me, though, while this book is well-written, my issue with it is that it is probably too much like a fantasy story for very young adults for me.

Same book, different book?

While this is Walker's second romantic fantasy, Walker is no stranger to the writing world. She also writes erotica, and it certainly shows in this book. The intense desire felt by Elishiba for Amshazar is tangible, and the sex scenes (despite some purple prose here and there) are definitely hot. There's also the lovely touch of sexual culture in this book. Both Karseedia and Aleem have their own practices and freedoms. Karseedia trains nubiles in the sexual arts, but keeps them as slaves. Hanrah also turns out to be homosexual, and in love with one of the nubile promised as a gift to Elishiba. In contrast, Aleem seems to embrace a number of sexual freedoms. Elishiba is no blushing virgin. She's already been involved with the head of the Immortals (Aleem's elite guard) but has had to distance herself from him due to the arranged marriage. Her handmaidens, the twins, seem to embrace a certain playful, sexual freedom as well, especially when it comes to the seduction of one of the nubiles, Kerr.

There's heterosexual sex, homosexual sex (or at least boy-on-boy action), and masturbation of both the male and female variety. That's a lot of sex. ;)

I bring this up because for whatever reason, the freedom taken in this book was a welcome relief. Walker doesn't treat sex as any sort of taboo in this culture, nor does she make a big deal out of the sex scenes there are. Oh, sure, Hanrah's mother is furious over his relationship with Kazeen, but not because she's homophobic, but because he's the Emperor and must produce heirs. In some ways, this book reminded me of a far less complex version of Kushiel's Dart. Well, without the pleasure-as-pain comparison.

The first is Mrs Giggles on Unveiling the Sorceress (full review here) and the second is by Shara Saunsaucie on Unveiling the Sorceress (full review here.) You can read more reviews here. I'm interested in both reviews, and glad to have the chance to read them. I learn from every comment I get. You wouldn't think it was the same book, though, would you? I guess it's all about viewpoint, where the reader is coming from, and that's important for authors to keep in mind when taking on board what reviewers have said about our work.

It's snowing here today, not very Spring-like at all. Keep warm, and have a great Easter weekend!

Clever kitteh...

Just popping out to say hi, honest :) I'm snowed under, and I'm sneezin'. Got deadlines to meet though. Wish me luck!

Popping out to say hello

March is turning out to be hugely busy here, and on the writing front I have four deadlines to meet, four short stories of varying lengths. As you can imagine, it’s a bit chaotic in the old brain department! The good news is one of them is done and gone, and one of them should be finished up later tonight. Two out of four sounds a helluva lot better -- I can feel the pressure subsiding a wee tad. ;-)

Meanwhile, I thought I’d grab a minute to do a quick post and say hello to my visitors. I hope you're all keeping warm and safe, especially with the various storms that are hitting the northern hemisphere. Here in Yorkshire we're currently being lashed by sleet, rain AND snow, intermittently, and we're expecting 80 mph gale force winds tonight. England has been hit by a so-called “weather bomb.” Needless to say, the cat knows this and she's been curled up in front of the fire all day long, bagsing her spot. The laptop and I are not too far away, following her good example.

On the personal front, I braved the outside world with a non-writing friend last night. We comandeered the fireside in a local pub to catch up on each other’s news. I mention it because times like this make me very aware of how odd the writing life can be…or perhaps I should say how difficult it is to explain it’s unique challenges! The writer's who call by will understand this. The bonus was my pal was in awe at how well and how relaxed I look. So, despite the various insecurities, it must be doing me good - right? Well, we've known each other for some 15 years, through some huge ups and downs for us both, so it was good hearing that news. It doesn't hurt that I've lost a bunch of weight over the last year or so. ;-)

Ooh, I’ve added a new widget here on the blog. In the menu you’ll now find a subscription service for updates. If you want to keep in touch with my news but hate coming round to find nothing new (sorry! :-) then this is the service for you. I use Feedblitz for several blogs and forums and I’ve been meaning to get it set up here.

In publication news, only three and a half months until RECKLESS is published! Yay! I can’t wait to see it in print. It’s now available for advance order online, and sites in the US are offering a hefty discount if you place your order now. You can check out an excerpt HERE, and here are the various links, in case you want to give it a gander:

Okay folks, back to the work-in-progress for me. Stay warm!

Another random image from my world...

On to the B&W images we go:

Robert Doisneau, Le Baiser De l' Hôtel De Ville, Paris, 1950

An iconic image if ever there was one.

I'd coveted my own print of this for years, I even have a postcard version in a small frame in a series of "Paris couples" that I made myself, (that series to come) and then one day I moved into a house for a mere three months, and it was pretty dull. Except for the fact that it had this poster on the wall in the kitchen...and it wasn't on the inventory. What can I say? I figured it had been abandoned by the last tenant and I adopted it, framed it, loved it... gave it the attention it needed. Lots.

There are so many stories in this image. Every time I look at it I see another.

Unveiling the Sorceress - interesting new review!

I was absolutely delighted to find this thoughtful review and analysis of UNVEILING THE SORCERESS, from Shara Saunsaucie. Here's a little snippet:

The book is just a very enjoyable read. I loved the emotional depth to the characters, particularly Elishiba, who is a very solid heroine. The is pretty tight and rolls right along, and despite the book's short length, there's no shortage on the romance, sex, and personal sacrifice the characters have to make. There's tragedy in this book, and that's an impressive punch for 219 pages. The story wraps up well, though I couldn't help but wonder if Walker might write a sequel, because the epilogue implies possible future adventures, and I'd enjoy seeing these characters again.

Go here to read the full review.

As many of my readers and friends know this novel is very close to my heart and I consider it my strongest publication to date. This thoughtful review was very encouraging for my erotic fantasy romance ambitions -- please check the review out if you are a reader of my contemporary erotic romance and are considering trying the book.

I would also say that if you want to read the book, please buy soon! It is unlikely to be on shelves in brick and mortar stores any more, but print copies are still available through Amazon.com, Amazon UK, and other online sellers. It is also available as an ebook through Fictionwise.

A little less good news

Notice I didn't say bad news ;-) I've discovered my next Secrets novella, SWEET-TALKING THE OPPOSITION, won't be published until December 2009. It's just how the cookie crumbles in scheduling, but it seems such a long way away!

Ah, well, it will come around soon enough, and at least I have something lined up for late 2009 :-) Want to know what I'm on about? You can read an excerpt here.

New reviews, and some thoughts on kink

Exciting stuff - my work has received a bunch of new reviews these past few days, all feedback which is both helpful and uplifting for me to read! I'll post the erotica comments today, fantasy tomorrow. :)

First up, a new review for ALONG FOR THE RIDE.

Along for the Ride is a titillating roller coaster ride of lust. The heat between Georgie and Cal is enough to start a fire, add in Jason and it becomes combustible. Not the run of the mill erotic romance, there is plenty of shocking naughtiness in this story and it will keep the reader fanning themselves throughout. The sex scenes are amazingly hot with a ton of spice. I enjoyed reading the story; it kept me wondering what was coming next. I was pleasantly surprised with the new and inventive ways the story took sexual twists. Ms. Walker has done a very nice job and I look forward to reading more by her. Dawnie, 4 angels from Fallen Angel reviews

Great stuff. Thanks, Dawnie! And these two comments about my short story, "Sign Your Name," which appears in Alison Tyler's K IS FOR KINKY, had me smiling and motivated today:

The problem of navigating myriad roads to sexual excitement is solved by Alison Tyler’s little compendiums of naughty goodness. She has compiled a series of items of delicious filth, bound them loosely into themes and delivered them as an Erotic Alphabet for your delight, delectation and fumbling....The richness of fantasy might even encourage you abandon your battery-operated friend in order to orchestrate a brand new real life experience with your loved one. I find myself persuaded to purchase a pair of white pants and a thick tipped biro – not sure? Try searching out “Sign Your Name” by Saskia Walker in K is for Kinky and you might find yourself doing the same. Corylus, for Blogcritics

Saskia Walker’s "Sign Your Name" starts the anthology with a comparatively mild deviance. Not that there is anything mild about the sizzling hot sex scenes in this raunchy tale of pens and penetration. "Sign Your Name" contains Saskia Walker’s signature style of writing intelligent, fun fiction. With her usual panache she produces the most powerful and passionate eroticism. Ashley Lister, for the Erotica Readers and Writers Association

Wooohoo! Many thanks to Ashley and Corylus.

I particularly appreciate that Ashley accepts the pen/ink/skin deviance as mild, but as kink, nonetheless. Sasha White and I were bewildered by a couple of comments we received for our 2007 KINK anthology , which showed the reader translated KINK exclusively for BDSM. Kink by definition refers to any unusual sexual practice (and this is shown so well through the variety in Alison Tyler's collection.) Therefore it includes BDSM but doesn’t exclude other kinky sex, such as wanting sex in public places or getting off on being written on. I see this correlation from time to time, where something isn’t considered kinky unless it's hardcore BDSM. Is the colloquial definition of kink narrowing, I wonder, in the same way that "menage" is now commonly accepted in place of "ménage a trois." I'm fascinated by etymology, in case you hadn't guessed ;-)

From Dictionary.com
KINK Slang.
a. bizarre or unconventional sexual preferences or behavior.
b. a person characterized by such preferences or behavior.

Speaking of words - I better get back to them! My schedule for March is heavy.

I have a large framed print of this painting in the bathroom.

I love this painting, and when I'm taking a lovely decadent soak in the bath, it gives me heaps of inspiration!

Svetting with Sven

The 70 days of Sweat writing challenge started today. If you're taking part, go for it! I'm cheering you on! For my own part, we woke up to a plumbing disaster (bust pipe in bathroom leaking down into kitchen below) so today was hijacked by towels, spanners, and bits of pipe. And it was Mark's birthday today, awww, but we've postoned that fun until tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm hoping to pull the writing back a bit this evening.
