Where I'm at

My desk is slowly disappearing under scraps of paper covered in illegible scribbles, notes and stuff I must remember to add to the work in progress, RECKLESS. Deeply immersed in the book now, which is a good thing. I need to get to the halfway point, at least, by the first of May, to feel confident about making my deadline. I’m almost there. Got to make it!

It’s been a pretty quiet week otherwise, mostly because I’m so locked into the book now. We’re having glorious sunshine here in England, truly summer weather, and when I grab my five-minute breaks I go sit outside to get some light.

I had a terrific new review for THE STRANGELING from Terry at Quality Book Reviews, who said I had "a magical imaginative spark in storytelling" which really helped my motivation. I’m also doing an interview with Terry, who has some very interesting questions. In the meantime here’s a quick snip from the review.

The Strangeling is a short fantasy novel that is packed with vivid details and a precise amount of action. Walker writes the story with impact and the story is a superbly crafted erotic fantasy. The characters are well developed with detail and the author manages to tie the characters together well.

This is the first of the author’s works I have had the pleasure of reviewing and have to admit I am hooked. I look forward to her new release next month which is also a fantasy entitled “Unveiling The Sorceress”. A Magical 5 stars for The Strangeling! Read more..

Back to work on RECKLESS. If I do okay I get let out on good behaviour :) I get to see the Cruxshadows play live, with a night at a hotel thrown in. I like yummy goals like that to aim for ;) Wish me luck to make my mini deadline. I’ll let you know if I do.

Erotic Authors Association

The Erotic Authors Association will cease taking membership requests at the end of April and will re-open in August. Join this fab group of people now!

New publication: GOT A MINUTE?

GOT A MINUTE? is now shipping from Amazon com and is on its way to the UK. This new collection of shortie short erotic stories is edited by the incredibly prolific Alison Tyler and published by Cleis Press.

"Everyone loves a quickie. A breathless, clothes-in-a-heap romp or a naughty tease before the elevator doors slide open. Even better when it’s a quick sex story you can read again and again. “Turn me on in 50 words or less and I’ll follow you home,” writes editor and erotica aficionado Alison Tyler about Got a Minute? The lovers in Marie Potoczny’s “The Other Side of Sleep” revel in the delicious pause between sleep and waking. Sharon Wachsler’s “Perfect” is a love story that happens to include ropes, rough play, and butterfly pillows. The 60 short and spicy stories in Got a Minute? will rev your motor and leave you aching for more. When it comes to hot sex, who doesn’t have a minute?"

I’ve got two shorts in this one "Hungry for Love" and "A Quick Dip," and I’m proudly sharing pages with a bevy of great writers, including Sylvia Day, and Sasha White -- my partner in KINK. Hehe.

If you've got a minute to get sexy why not try the book out? :)

Call for subs: fantasy shorts, essays and poems

As I think I've mentioned here before, I got my start on this writing journey of mine in a small press fantasy zine (UK) called VISIONARY TONGUE, back in 1996. If I hadn't subbed, I wouldn't be here talking about writing now, that's for sure. I was professionally edited and encouraged, shown my strengths and weaknesses, and got to see my fiction in print for the first time. My first fantasy short appeared next to a Neil Gaiman article, I nearly passed out with excitement :)

The zine is still going, and I've been introduced to some great fantasy authors and poets through my continued reading of it. Why not give it a go? Check out the site and the current call for subs HERE.

Taking stock and…a huge sigh of relief..

Another week gone! It’s probably because I’m knee-deep in deadlines and working right through weekends at the moment, but the weeks seem to be flying by. RECKLESS is the big WiP at the mo, and it’s coming on well. It could be going a lot faster on the word count front, but it’s steady and productive so there’s a glimmer of hope I’ll meet these deadlines. :)

It’s been a great week for me overall, though. It may not come across on this blog but I’m a real worrier. When I stop to think about it, I also have very little self-confidence in my writing. Never a day (hour!) goes by that I don’t worry about readers enjoying my stories, selling copies, writing well enough, reviews, and all those things that can eat away at writers. It didn’t really change when a New York publisher signed me, in fact it got worse.

I feel as if I’ve been holding my breath for over a year now, waiting to see what will happen. It's hard, not really having any real idea how the first novel is selling. I can’t even walk into a bookshop and see my book because it's not shelved in the UK, so the whole thing often feels unreal to me. Before it went out, I knew I had readers who enjoyed my short stories. I’d also had many positive responses to my novellas for Red Sage, and my e-novel was selling well, but this was still a debut novel.

This week brought two positive bits of information that proved to me I should try to worry less, and concentrate on the writing. Being listed as a finalist in the Passionate Plume contest was such an amazing surprise, an honour that really gave me a badly needed boost. This week I also received my first Penguin statement. Boy, was I scared to open it! It would list how many sales I’d had for DOUBLE DARE from the time it came out in October, up until end of December.

I felt nauseas with nerves, really bad. When I did get it open, the first thing I saw was a cheque/check. I stared at it in disbelief! To be honest, I never even expected to earn out my advance. I can’t begin to describe the HUGE RELIEF I felt…

Wow, thank you to all readers out there who have bought my first book. It means so much for me to get over this threshold and have the chance to go on and entertain readers some more. It’s been a great motivation too, and I’ve been able to really enjoy my writing again. There’s nothing like a huge lump of stress about sales figures and all the rest that comes with being an author to put a kink in your writing stride!

I also heard from my Juno editor that advance orders for UNVEILING THE SORCERESS are looking good, and that one of the book buyers had been "intrigued" by the cover copy. All fab news for this here worrier. A big weight lifted off me.

So, it's back to work with a bit more oomph :) I love how RECKLESS is turning out, and hope that everyone who’s enjoyed my stories so far will enjoy this story even more. I’m learning and growing all the time as a writer, and this one feels strong. Still not sure exactly when it’s going to come out, but I’m sure I’ll find out soon. Not long until the deadline! I better get a shift on.

Have a great weekend!

Amazon plog go bye bye

Am I the last to know? I went to blog on my Amazon "plog" and it had gone, pfft. I couldn't find the link to post and after ages hunting around (cursing) I went to look at my book pages to try to get in that way, and none of my posts were there. At first I thought it was bad juju because I had ranted about the system here :) Then I checked out a couple of other authors, their posts had all gone too. So I mailed Amazon. Apparently the Plog system has "made way" for something called Amazon Daily. Nice of them to let us know! I can't say I'll be mourning it. I never did warm to the set up, but advance notice might have been appropriate.

Update: well the messages are back on book pages again, so what is the difference in the new system, I wonder.

Haha

Try This :
Take 60 seconds or less to do this. I guarantee you will pass this on to someone else. It's too funny not to.

1. go to www.google.com

2. click on "maps"

3. click on "get directions"

4. type New York in the first box (the "from" box)

5. type London in the second box (the "to" box) & hit "get directions"
on the same line

6. scroll down to step #23

Virtual book tour

I received my SHE’S ON TOP copies yesterday (I’ll be giving a copy away in my next newsletter,) and can’t wait to get stuck in and read the whole book. Rachel Kramer Bussel, the editor for this collection and its partner book, HES ON TOP, is running a virtual book tour for the two books. We’re about half way through now and it’s a lot of fun. On alternate days, one of the books is blogged about, either comments or an excerpt. To check it out, click on the image below.

It’s exciting to see my story “The Inner Vixen” mentioned by readers, especially because I really like the way that story turned out. It was based on something that happened to me (the whole mid section in the gig venue, I just didn’t end up with the guy ;) and when I got the call from Rachel I thought that experience might be a good starting point for a she-dom story.

Working with Rachel is always exciting. She comes up with great themes and wants writers to push beyond the obvious. With HE'S ON TOP and SHE'S ON TOP she wanted writers to really get inside the head of the dominant, to explore what made the character tick and how they felt about their sub. That was challenging and exciting, and whilst I knew my experience with “Daniel” had potential, it was unnerving writing something that was based so wholly on my own experience. Normally I draw on my experiences here and there for my short stories, weaving in images, people, places, dreams, openings and endings, but not so much as this one. Anyway, there’s a bit of trivia for anyone who has read it!

It was a totally gorgeous day here in the north of England. Hope it was good where you are.

What I'm reading right now

Cecilia Tan's Live journal documenting her tour of Asia. Cecilia (a writer/editor/publisher who I've been lucky to work with) is traveling with her family, cruising from place to place in the far east with the most fascinating stop-offs. This method of visiting multiple destinations on one trip really appeals to me, simply because I can't walk far since my disability got worse, so I can't travel as much as I did. It would be a good option. One day. Maybe. Meanwhile, I'm devouring Cecilia's posts and recommend them!

Yummy cover...

Isn't she gorgeous?! I've just had confirmation from Alison Tyler, the editor of this series, that my short story "The Things That go on at Siesta Time" will appear in this anthology, due out in July. Exciting stuff! I'm loving these books in the alphabet series and I'm so pleased to be a part of it. They are adorably petite too, easy to slip into your bag/purse for a quick naughty reading fix at any time. ;)

Publication day: AGAINST THE GRAIN is now available

AGAINST THE GRAIN, an erotic futuristic romance novella, is now available as an ebook at Extasy Books. This story is my foray into a far distant future world, a tale where I consider what sex and society might be like in the future.

Here's the blurb:

In Delfidian, a future world where homosexuality is the norm and heterosexuality is seen as a throwback to ancient times, two female lovers break the rules in order to be with males. Forbidden fruit has never tasted so good, but what will the consequences be?

Inspired by the eternal question: "what will sex and gender be like in the future?" AGAINST THE GRAIN is a voyage into a future world where sexuality has evolved. In Delfidian, sexuality is controlled by a society that governs whom its citizens should be attracted to. Sexual desire is a powerful force, one that will make us break down boundaries and flout norms when we are in its grip. Trying to control it can only spell trouble....

EXCERPT:

Aurora clenched her thighs together, crushing her pounding clit between them. Lust was running her ragged, her skin alert to every sensation, a nagging ache at her core demanding action and soon. To keep from touching herself, she reached for her viewcom, running her fingers along its polished chrome frame, wishing she could reach out and touch him instead. Sullivan’s image flickered and then came back into focus. Her hand automatically went to her keypad. “Oh, I thought the connection had broken.”

He shook his head. “Still here, and I’ll be back on planet in just few days.”

Heat welled again between her thighs in response to that promise. She wanted him here. She was desperate to see him. Females weren’t expected to develop strong feelings of attachment to males, but she had. Just looking at his ruggedly handsome face on the viewcom had her desire running rampant. He looked so human, so darkly attractive with his mane of thick hair hanging to his shoulders and his deep brown eyes. He smiled. “You look well.”

His words flattered her. At first she had taken his manner toward her to be respect for his status as a procreator. They had been brought together to mate in the ancient human way, and they respected the roles they shared. Then it occurred to her that his attitude might indicate something else. Right now, there was a sexual edge to his expression. It did strange things to her. She felt as if he had touched her, stroking her pussy in preparation for their joining. Her body was buzzing with need. Did he want it? Did he enjoy it as well? She knew that he missed the male lover he’d had to leave behind when he’d been assigned to her, but could it be that he felt an attachment to her, too? She chastised herself when she realized her thoughts were wandering. It was unexpectedly good sex; that was all. “Yes, I am well. Thank you. And you?” Unable to resist any longer, she clasped one hand over her pussy through the fabric of her gown.

Please note, this novella contains m/f, f/f and group sex, a whole lot of loving!

NB: This novella was previously available on the Erotic Authors Association Signature Series, and is based on a short story called "Delfidian" which was published in SEXTOPIA, an anthology edited by Cecilia Tan for Circlet Press.

Update on THE STRANGELING availability and the cover art contest

Because of distribution problems it took a while for THE STRANGELING to reach sales points, both online internationally and in stores in the US. The good news is it's all sorted now. I’m starting to get happy reader email (always a wonderful experience!) and entries for the cover art contest I’m running, which also indicates that the books are getting out now.

I had planned to close this contest at the end of April but with the delay in books getting out (and the fact you have to have read the book to enter this one,) I’m going to keep it open until the end of May. Here are the details again:

Win a signed print of the gorgeous cover art from THE STRANGELING, which was done by fantasy artist,Timothy Lantz. This is not a cover flat, it's a print of the actual artwork itself. I’ve got one framed on my office wall and it really is a pleasure to look at. To enter, send me an email to the following address: saskiawalker @ gmail. com (no gaps) with the answer to this question:

The heroine of The Strangeling is called Maerose. What is the name of Maerose’s sister?

Please put the following in the subject line to help me stay organised ;) "Strangeling cover art contest entry"

I’ve got three 8 by 10 inch prints up for grabs. I’ll post the results here and on my newsletter. Anyone can enter, reviewers included.

Speaking of cover art, I've had a preview of potential cover art for the next couple of SECRETS anthologies. Volume 19 includes my novella, WHAT YOU WISH FOR, coming in July. One of the covers was very yummy indeed, with a guy on it who looks like the guy in my story (always a bonus! ;) Can't share yet because it's subject to change, but will do as soon as it's finalised.

Weekend over and out

Easter weekend flew by, I hope it was good for you! For us it was a combination of me proofing galleys and writing (finally getting back to it, after lots of unpleasant real life interruptions -- and about time too, my work schedule looks hellish thanks to those interruptions,) sorting stuff in the attic, a big clear out, (this so we can sleep up there in a couple of weeks when we paint the bedroom, I’m bad with paint fumes,) and having some chill time in the city while it wasn’t heaving with shoppers. First we went goodie-gathering at the Chinese supermarket, (yum, we always come out loaded up with supplies including crockery, loose green tea, good fresh tofu, noodles and a veritable cornucopia of spices.) We also ate out (chilli chicken ramen! More yummy goodness,) and then we hit the bookshops.

We have two large shops in the city that we check out, Borders and Waterstones. I buy all my books online so visiting the book shops is more about seeing what’s out and gauging trends at a glance. It’s also like visiting with friends. I know that probably sounds weird, but I go along and spot all my friends books on the shelf, grinning like an idiot. This amuses Mark no end. :) In terms of my own US-published work, only the short story anthologies make it over at the mo. Cleis Press especially do very well in the UK and I always see books with my work stocked and selling over here, which is lovely.

What’s impressive is that the romance and the erotic book shelves are expanding in the shops we frequent. Lots of stock and a much wider range. Kensington Aphrodisia books are there, the whole list! It’s sad for me that Berkley Heat isn’t distributed the same way. The Berkley Sensation books are, but not Heat. I get a real buzz from seeing so many of my pals in the States with books available here though. What was also interesting was my first Red Sage publication spotting in the UK, Angela Knight’s novel FOREVER KISS. That was a treat. Maybe some of the anthologies will make it into the system too. I checked out with the company owner and she said there is now distribution through Borders in English speaking countries. Hurrah!

More from me later. Have a great week!

eredsage.com -- call for subs

Red Sage have put out a call for ebook subs. There were rumblings at RWA last summer about a new epub side opening up sometime in the future, but these are the first actual guidelines I've seen. Check them out HERE at ERWA.

She wants to be RECKLESS

I've put the first chapter of my current work-in-progress up on my website. It's not polished as yet, but I'd love to get feedback. If you check it out, let me know what you think! (NB: adult content.)

BLURB: At the age of twenty-nine, London valuation expert Katrina Hammond is evolving into a stronger, more sexual woman. When she subsequently finds herself at the center of a struggle for power and dominance between two brothers, she welcomes the darkly erotic charge the situation brings.

Katrina's job is to value a collection of art objects for auction in the Catalonia villa of the Teodoro family, where Sergio Teodoro rules. Sergio is a dominant master who compels her attention. Nicolas, his younger brother - a disinherited artisan - also seeks her out, seducing her. As Katrina uncovers the subterfuge surrounding the collection, she finds that there is more to Nicolas and Sergio’s battle than meets the eye, and more to her growing allegiances than may be good for her.

My familiar and her white whisker

New publication: SHE'S ON TOP

The SHE’S ON TOP anthology -- together with its partner anthology, HE’S ON TOP -- is now available in the States and will soon be in the UK at Waterstones, Borders and online through Amazon UK. These exciting new anthologies are published by Cleis Press and were edited by the lovely Lusty Lady herself, Rachel Kramer Bussel. You can read a fascinating interview with Rachel on the subject of the two anthologies HERE.

I have a story in SHE'S ON TOP, and I can't wait until my copy arrives. Just get a look at that cover! It's one of my favourites.

Turning the tables on rigid gender roles, the stories in She’s on Top honor the Amazon, the dominatrix, the handcuff-toting, whip-wielding she-devil of the male bottom’s deepest dreams. Employing every item in their bag of tricks, from strap-ons to metal cinches, these hot dommes like nothing better than teasing and tormenting their devoted subjects – often at the same time. With stories by some of the best writers in the field of BDSM erotica such as Stan Kent, Debra Hyde, and Saskia Walker, She’s on Top shows that pleasure’s best when dispensed by a firm female hand.

Here’s a quick taster from my story, THE INNER VIXEN (NB: explicit adult content!)

THE INNER VIXEN
Saskia Walker

Daniel is kneeling before me. I walk around him, my paces measured, my long leather boots making a quiet but insistent sound as they brush together. It’s all I’m wearing. Daniel is stripped to the waist, his arms cuffed behind him. I’m admiring his body, so leanly muscular as he kneels on the floor before me, resting on his haunches, his torso upright and proud. As I consider the fact that he is mine, my willing pet, power plumes through me. Like a heady sexual elixir, I thrive on it. My core tightens and my sex grows damper with each passing moment.

His head moves imperceptibly as he watches me, and I revel in his adoring gaze. His cock is hard inside his faded black jeans, but I know he likes that confinement, just as he likes his wrists bound behind his back while I survey him. He’s so alert, so taut with restrained desire. I feel it pouring out of him and it empowers me more.

As I walk on, circling him, I reach over, pull a chair close behind him and sit. Over his shoulder, I see our reflection in the mirror. He’s looking too, and it’s the perfect image of woman and lover.

I trace one hand down his back. His muscles ripple and I know he’s longing for more, for a more vivid assault on his senses: the whip. Making him wait, I sit back in the chair, lift my foot and rest one stiletto heel between his shoulder blades, edging him forward. He pivots against it and groans aloud, his body arched. I know just how much pain he wants, how much he needs. My body responds to his reaction, heat rising to the surface of my skin. My inner vixen is revving up to full throttle, the essential me – the inner woman that Daniel recognized and introduced me to.

“How did you know that I would respond?” I asked him the night we met.

“I saw her, your inner vixen. I wanted to know her. I wanted to experience her.”

So did I.

That’s how it began.

Back to business

Our few days away from home went by in a flash. What we did was spend a couple of days visiting with my parents in Devon, with a stopover in Shakespeare country on the way back. We had great weather for the trip, but it felt rushed and crazy -- oh and I lost a filling on the way down (the usual holiday drama, in other words ;) -- but it was a good break.

Sometimes when I go away I wonder if it’s worth it, though. It has taken me the best part of two days to catch up on email replies and list mail, etc. I haven’t even got to the majority of the blogs I like to keep up with yet. It did do me good, getting away from the PC. I think :) I spent the first few days pining for it, and the last few wishing I never had to turn it on again. Hmm. Weird that.

One of the things I came back to was a surprise new review for ALONG FOR THE RIDE, my e-novel. This one has been out nearly two years so I wasn’t expecting new reviews, but the comments from Robin at My Book Cravings really made me smile and put me in the mood to write again.

ALONG FOR THE RIDE is quite literally an erotic thrill ride. As always, Saskia Walker sets the stage in paragraph one for a sensually intense romance. The ménage scenes are highly erotic and may melt your computer screen. These three characters, along with the supporting cast, will have you riveted to your seat, panting for the next step in their sensual journey of discovery. Cal and Jason are both extremely sexual men whose exuberant enjoyment of sex comes across with every scorching love scene. ALONG FOR THE RIDE is not a story for the faint of heart. There is a great deal of intensity in each and every scene that pulled me into the book completely. I could not wait to see what would happen next between these superbly written characters. I loved the sassy heroine and her two wonderful alpha males. This unique love story is one that I will read again; not only for the sheer enjoyment but to make sure that I haven’t missed a thing. Log on to Loose ID and purchase a copy of this jewel of a book today! You do not want to miss this one. 5 roses.

I love the image of the melting computer screen. :) Motivational stuff, much appreciated. Over the next three months I have 79,000 words of a novel to write, 18,000 words of a novella, and two short stories. I don’t even want to know how many words that works out at per day! It’s going to be busy. First up I’ll be working on the novel, my next contemporary erotic romance, RECKLESS. I’ll post an excerpt here soon.

I hope all is well with you guys. Have a great week!
